The current low cost of desalted seawater is US$600 per acre-foot or 326,000 gallons. This acre-foot cost is equal to $0.01 per five gallons. By comparison, a quart of soda pop costing $1 is 2,000 times more expensive. There are six ways to reduce the cost of seawater desalting by 50 percent in the near to moderate future.
