Ask The Expert: Carbon and Ozone
01/02/2001

Question: Can I disinfect an activated carbon bed with ozone?

Roxana Muñoz Castillo -- Guatemala

Answer: With 30 years of activated carbon experience, I recommend using ozone before and after your activated carbon bed -- not directly on the bed -- if you're seeking the added disinfection or oxidative properties that ozone provides. Ozone breaks large molecules into smaller molecules by breaking chemical bonds. You do not water to break-up or weaken your activated carbon. Ozone can kill microorganisms and reduce taste and odor. You may consider using an activated carbon impregnated with silver, which keeps microorganisms growth on the carbon under control.
