Disinfection
The decontamination of fluids and surfaces. In water treatment, the destruction or removal of pathogenic microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, cysts, etc.) to make it safe for human consumption. Water disinfection should reduce the population of microorganisms by 99.9 to 99.9999 percent.
