The flow of water in a medium in a direction opposite to normal flow. Flow is often returned into the system by backflow if the wastewater in a purification system is severely contaminated. Flow of water in a pipe or line in a direction opposite to the normal flow; often associated with back siphonage, or the flow of possibly contaminated water into a potable water system.
